The mystery of why there are NO Westerners in Chinese Restaurants in Hong Kong

....... a personal opinion

I am always mystified by comments made by people writing reviews on Tripadvisor for Chinese Restaurants in Hong Kong - see above, "First stop Dim Sum with all the locals, no Westerners" the inference being that for it to be a truly "local" experience then there can be no Westerners present and that a Westerner makes the Restaurant touristy??

I take exception at that, having lived in Hong Kong for 46 years and bearing in mind this was a British Colony for 156 years, foreigners have always been present here....

But I digress, let me give you the facts that give you a more realistic reason why there are no Westerners or that it is just locals in our Chinese restaurants.

  • Hong Kong is 427 sq miles in total

  • We have anywhere from 15,000 - 40,000 Chinese Restaurants in Hong Kong so lets say 20,000

  • The population of Hong Kong is 7.37 million at the end of 2017

  • 0.8% of the population in Hong Kong is WHITE and 95% of the population is CHINESE

  • in 2017 we had over 45 million Mainland Chinese visitors to Hong Kong and they eat in local restaurants

  • So chances are you can go into any Chinese Restaurant anywhere in Hong Kong and not see a white person, it has nothing to do with having an authentic local eating experience

  • I have eaten in over 1,300 Chinese Restaurants in Hong Kong and pretty much in most Chinese Restaurants you either never see a white face or 95% of the patrons are Chinese!!

  • ...and for the record and in my experience, the best Chinese Restaurants in Hong Kong are frequented by local Chinese people and foreigners alike, good food is good food ........... and this does not make the restaurant touristy!

... yes that really is a 107ct yellow diamond ring in Graff, the Peninsula Hotel

I love Graff in the Peninsula Hotel, they always have amazing diamonds and other jewellery on display.

My all time favourite was 3 + years ago when they had this fabulous yellow diamond ring on display, so Elizabeth Taylor and yes, they sold it!

A soon to be US$3 Billion pile of dirt

This is the Murray Road Car Park in Central District which sold in mid 2017 for US$3 Billion and will be demolished from mid January 2018 onwards.

When it has been demolished it will then for a while be the most expensive pile of dirt in the World before it turns into a new commercial building on a 50 year lease and naturally the property developer will make a fortune, such is the craziness of the Hong Kong property market

The Bugatti Chiron

Insane, an appropriate word to describe this car and I actually touched it!!

What an amazing vehicle but I do prefer the Pagani Zonda Absolute.

MTR Subway Stations - the Caring Points

Pulling a sickie

I have witnessed it so many times on the subway and on the platforms here in Hong Kong, young women holding their heads and looking faint and yes it has gotten so bad that the MTR Subway Company has set up a medical desk in major stations at rush hour to deal with the problem.

I do not consider our trains to be that crowded at rush hour and I see more of these young fainting ladies in the morning on their way to work so they are probably pulling a sickie!

They now do announcements on the trains for those that are feeling ill to contact staff at the next station.

Only in Hong Kong

Sometimes a rock is just a rock

Clearly this is just a rock, located at St. Johns Cathedral in Central and yes, some people have asked me if it has mystical and / or magical properties.... I doubt it but given how superstitious people are in Hong Kong nothing would surprise me.

oh..... and basically it is located on Church grounds.....

This is NOT the Sydney Opera House

....but i it is the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, home to music in Hong Kong and it is such a shame that with a fabulous waterfront location they could not come up with a more stunning design - it is known locally as the Toilet Building ( I suspect because the same tiles can be found on public toilets in Hong Kong ).

Design aside, the acoustics are world class and for me that is what matters, unlike the Sydney Opera House which grows on people and is iconic ours remains under appreciated and a bit of a joke.

Porsche

I love Porsche and I have taken over 8,000 images of Porsche cars in Hong Kong, my favourite Porsche remains the GT3 RS but I would settle for this model!

Hong Konger's love Porsche and they are very popular with the ladies.

The Murray - Hong Kong's newest 5 star Hotel

Old timers in Hong Kong will remember the Murray Building from the 1960's which was Government Building until they decided to cash in and sell it to a property developer who then decided to convert the building into a Hotel

As you can see (and we are talking about the white building in the background) it has a unique design and was further modified by the office of Sir Norman Foster who has done so much work in Hong Kong - they even consulted with the original architect from the 1960's.

Opening in mid January 2018 it will certainly become iconic very quickly given it's location in the business district and it is next to St. Johns Cathedral, I think it is a lovely building and credit must go to the Government for preserving and restoring an iconic Hong Kong building.

Oh my golly gosh, the simply amazing Pagani Zonda Absolute - this is a custom made car and is rumoured to be the only one of it's kind in the world and it is in Hong Kong!... oh... and yes, this is my picture, talk about being in the right place at the right time.
